How can Human Traffic be a metaphor for the effects model?
The effects model, also known as the hypodermic model, sees the audience as duped and doped. Media is 'injected' into the audience, much like drugs are injected by addicts... This theory suggests that we simply lay back and accept the media as it is presented to us, much like when someone takes drugs. Drug taking is a strong and prominent theme in Human Traffic as many of the main characters talk about the drugs they take. Therefore, the film Human Traffic can itself be a metaphor for the Hypodermic Model as they both relate to drug taking.

Well done, Jos.
ReplyDeleteIs there a counter argument? Does the film also suggest the gratifications model? Or, is Human Traffic a film about media (music) consumption that they youth cultures 'inject' in order to escape their cultural bounds?
